The sixth grade Language Arts program at BMS has two main components; literature and composition.
The literature program provides opportunities for each student to understand the different literary genres, as well as how to use the tools for literary analysis. During the school year students are presented with a variety of materials allowing them to develop their inferential and critical thinking skills. Differentiation is built into the curriculum. Instruction also includes opportunities to develop public speaking and listening techniques. There is an emphasis on classic literature as students discover the different literary elements.
The writing component incorporates vocabulary building and the proper application of grammar, mechanics and usage. The primary elements of composition are reinforced through various writing activities including essays, creative writing pieces, poetry, and a modified research paper. The sixth grade curriculum acts as a stepping stone to the seventh and eighth grade Language Arts classes.
The total Language Arts program allows students to develop a fuller comprehension and appreciation of the art of communication through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Special attention is paid to aligning class instruction with the required Ohio Common Core Standards.
