Students will take some class time to create responses to their summer reading. We will be using the online Accelerated Reader tests connected to their two summer reading books. We also will be taking some class time to create a written response to these books. One of the books read was A Long Walk to Water and the other was a choice from four different options. We will begin the week as students complete a summary of their choice book. Throughout the next few weeks we will be completing other activities connected to A Long Walk to Water.
** Students should bring in their summer reading notes. The notes are port of the summer reading requirement. They are able to use these notes to help for their in class response to their books.
We will take some class time this week to we introduce our Red Hot Roots Program that we will be using throughout this year. One resource that we are introducing this week is the online program Vocabulary.com. This is part of our vocabulary study of Latin and Greek roots and stems. The first unit looks at words using 'pro' and 'retro' - meaning backward and forward. During the few weeks we will learn about these roots and generate new words connecting to them. Some of the roots activities will be done for homework.
Students will have an in-class assignment in Newsela, one of our online resources that creates articles that are topical and appropriate for our middle school students. Students will be reading and responding to an article. They will be reading, learning how to annotate, and answering questions.
We also will be working on an autobiographical poem that is part of our Selfie-Swirl project. Students will be working on this throughout the week, and they will be on display in the classroom.
We will be learning about summary and theme as it helps us define different literature. We will be examining the application of the graphic organizer "Somebody... Wanted... But... So... Then," as it connects to the different literary elements. This will be a transition into a three paragraph essay that students will be starting next week in class.
Students will start writing in their journals this week. This is an opportunity for students to write about a wide array of topics as the school year progresses. The journal responses are kept at school and will be a good way to reflect as students go through 6th grade.

L.A. for Week 1 - August 14th - 16th:
Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts class!
In this 'Weekly Updates' section I will be providing an overview that will include some of what we are doing in L.A. class for the week ahead. There may be some changes made, as the week progresses. This site is fluid - always changing. Please check out the different tabs on the menu bar at the top of this 'Language Arts with Mrs. Goodman' website. There are numerous materials, activities and online resources available on this site for you to investigate.
This first week in class, as we get to know each other, students will receive an overview of the L.A. program with some of the expectations, procedures, and requirements. This week students will need to bring in their materials, including their ELA 1/2 inch binders and their composition books. These binders and composition books will stay in class.
Students will be visiting the BMS library this week from L.A. class, to learn about the procedures from Mrs. Ungier, our BMS librarian. Students will have an opportunity to choose and check out an independent reading book at that time. Independent reading is an integral part of our ELA curriculum, tailored to each student.
We will go over the summer reading requirements this week. As a way to introduce them- selves, students will find out the origin of their name, to share with the class. If time permits students will be completing an in-class response to one of their books this Friday as well as a written response next week for the second book. This week we will be doing our first journaling of the year, along with some topical close reading in class.
Chromebooks will hopefully be distributed sometime this week. These will be staying at school. Have a great week!!... There is an ELA information sheet with classroom expectations, that students are to share with parents, get it signed and then return to class by this Friday, August 16th.
